E.T. Phone Home? NASA & Smartphones
What is the difference between a smartphone and the computer that landed people on the moon? About 100,000 times more ram and 1,000 times faster computing power…. On the phone, that is…
This factoid, as we learned on our recent Speed2Design NASA Ames Center trip, spawned the new NASA innovation of PhoneSat – Smartphones NASA sends into space to act as Satellites.
During the Speed2Design TechTalk we learned a smartphone is very much like a satellite. Smartphones can take photos, transmit information, collect data – basically do all the functions that a satellite performs but in a smaller, cheaper package.
So how do we get these new smart satellites in orbit? Below are some of the designs the PhoneSat team has produced.
